Scarlet Guara (?)--A Common Flower

pink & white cluster of flowers

This is one that can be seen in your average field. The flowers are very delicate and, as far as I can tell, the entire cluster is not in bloom at once, as one sees with a bluebonnet. As newer flowers open up on top, the older ones wither. So one typically see unopened buds, blooming and withering flowers together all on one stalk. In my research the mostly likely candidate for the identity of this one was the scarlet guara. Although the photo in my book wasn't an obvious match, enough common characteristics are there to make me comfortable with the identification.
