This one is now identified, more or less. According to my reference, this the copper-mallow or a related species, the globe mallow, or both. According to the book the copper mallow is orange and I did eventually find an orange version as you will see, but the most common colors were reddish-pink or purplish-pink which are perhaps the globe mallows. Anyway, there is a lot of this stuff growing just outside the gates to where I live. The plant itself is kind of ugly but now that it's bloomed it's really quite nice to look at! Especially when each plant has a different hue.
